Now, the first question coming out of everyone’s mouth is how is cannabis supposed to make you slimmer? Well, believe it or not, a connection between cannabis use and lower rates of obesity has been made by the India Times.
The report explores the inherent paradox of cannabis being an appetite mediator, also illuminating that a lower percentage of cannabis users are overweight when compared to non-cannabis users. But, how could this be when the very well known side-effect of smoking cannabis is getting ‘the munchies’, or for those who don’t know cannabis lingo, a boost in appetite after smoking cannabis.
This apparently doesn’t do much to counteract the fact that cannabis users are skinnier than us all. So what is it that makes a cannabis user in a better weight range than the rest of us? Could CBD for weight loss be the true instigator? Perhaps CBD oil for weight loss is just one more quality in the ever-increasing list of benefits of this versatile little cannabinoid.
While the India Times’ report focuses on THC, a report made by the Waking Times confirmed that THC’s little sister, CBD, may also have a similar effect – without the drudgery of having to get stoned in order to gain the same benefits.
CBD May Help Rev Up Your Metabolism
In the the report, a connection between cannabinoids and an increase in metabolic rate, meaning your body burning up more calories, was found. And apparently it didn’t matter whether or not you’d been raiding the fridge either, as cannabis users generally have a higher calorie diet than non-smokers.
So, now we’re all really intrigued by how that’s supposed to work. The Waking Times focussed on cannabis for its widely known reputation as a pain reliever and inflammation queller, but the article also noted CBD oil for diabetes could be the next big thing, as it has the ability to help create lower insulin resistance in the human body, as well as improving fasting insulin, which means less likelihood of weight gain and even less risk of developing Type ll Diabetes.
University Studies Show Cannabis Users are Slimmer
University Laval in Quebec Canada surveyed 786 members of an Inuit community who reported a high incidence of cannabis use. In this extensive study published in the scientific journal Obesity in 2016, researchers found that cannabis users had a lower body mass index (BMI) and a lower body fat percentage than non-users.
Associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, Murray Mittleman, also said of cannabis smokers that “their fasting insulin levels were lower, and they appeared to be less resistant to the insulin produced by their body to maintain a normal blood-sugar level,” a fact that seems to indicate that cannabinoids can help stave off Type II Diabetes.
So can CBD oil help with weight loss? The studies seem to suggest it can!
Mittleman also studied the effects of cannabis on metabolism, and says that those who use cannabis have a far more efficient carbohydrate metabolism. A study by the University of Miami surveyed a massive 8,500 people between the ages of 20 and 59, suggesting that regular cannabis users had lower blood sugar levels and less abdominal fat, which had them at a lower risk of obesity, Type ll Diabetes, bad cholesterol, and heart disease.
So can CBD help with diabetes? It would seem that not only is CBD helpful for those who want to control appetite, but CBD oil for weight loss and even CBD oil for diabetes could be the next big thing to hit the market for those struggling with shifting their weight.
Appetite Regulation and The Endocannabinoid System
To understand how CBD may work on appetite, we need to know a little bit more about the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). This is one of the most important physiological systems in our body, which mediates and organises many vital functions in the body, from sleep to mood, the reproductive system and – you guessed it – appetite. It works with cannabinoid receptors in the body called CB1 and CB2, which are the signallers that influence hormone and cannabinoid production, and send it to where it is needed in the body.
This system is believed to play a very important role in homeostasis – a phenomenon that brings the body into balance. Clearly, being either over- or underweight isn’t a balanced state of affairs. While CBD is widely known to stimulate appetite in those who need more nutrition, the use of CBD as an appetite suppressant may well work for those who need to lose weight. It’s all a matter of homeostasis, or balance.
The lower Body Mass Index (BMI) of cannabis users could be explained by an adaptive down-regulation of brain endocannabinoid signaling. While acute THC stimulates appetite, the repeated stimulation of CB1 receptors by THC decreases receptor expression and sensitivity, and long-term stimulation may result in antagonistic rather than agonistic triggering of CB1 receptors, which would dampen hunger signals.
Now, CBD and another component of cannabis, tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV), may also reduce body weight, as animal models of obesity have shown THCV to increase metabolism of fat cells. But before you get excited about cannabis’ possible fat-burning abilities, understand that very few strains of cannabis on the market have high enough levels of THCV and CBD to have massive effects.
That’s why buying pure and safe CBD for diabetes or CBD oil for weight loss is a far better option than inhaling damaging smoke that may or may not give you the intended effect you’re after.
Now You Know it, How Do You Take it?
There are so many different delivery methods to choose from, in order to help get you the slimming effects that cannabis seems to promote. Most of the research and studies that highlight these benefits surround the inhalation of cannabis buds; the way most recreational users take their cannabis, but there are plenty of other ways that you can get the benefits of these great cannabinoids; all without damaging your lungs.
Just some ways you can boost appetite regulation is by taking CBD in any of its many forms, which includes one of the most easy and well-known ways of taking any medication: the sublingual method. This method requires you to place the CBD underneath your tongue and leave it for 60 seconds or longer before swallowing.
There are also CBD capsules, CBD suppositories and even CBD vape oil, which all have their benefits and different levels of bioavailability. Most important, though, is buying a product that will work for you. So do your research before buying anything, as you could end up with a product that fails to do what you need of it.
There’s No Need to Get High
This may be a bit of a bummer for some, but The Waking Times reporter Marco Torres discovered that there’s no need to get high in order to experience the fat-burning benefits of cannabinoids. After researching a further string of studies, he concluded that CBD oil and weight loss works in much the same way as THC does, and he also made mention of this less-well known cannabinoid, THCV.
Fitness guru Ben Greenfield also writes at length about the benefits of cannabinoids for those hoping to enhance physical fitness and lose weight. He admits to using THC as a “performance enhancing drug”, but also recognizes that the legality of this would be sketchy in most states across the US. He recommends CBD as an alternative that can’t make anyone high.
The idea of losing weight with the help of cannabis is catching on and already, there’s talk of “cannabis diets”. We advise caution. Sensible eating really is the key to getting slim and staying slim, and although it seems as if CBD hemp oil might really boost metabolism helping people to lose weight, it’s best not to follow fad diets.
It’s nevertheless interesting to see that CBD for weight loss and CBD oil for diabetes is getting genuine research attention.
